The Lightning Grab Game 1 From The Suns, Looking To Win 5th League Title Tonight
(Leesburg, Fla.)- The Leesburg Lightning took Game 1 of a potential three game set over the DeLand Suns on Saturday night, putting the team one win away from securing their fifth league title.
DeLand would take the early advantage in the top of the 1st off a Nathan Cannizaro RBI-single that would score in Damion Kenealy to put the Suns out in front 1-0. Later that half, Anthony Gonzalez would ground out into a fielder's choice to propel DeLand to a 2-0 lead.
However, the Bolts would respond quickly, grabbing four runs, including the go-ahead runs off an RBI-single from Orlando Pena to put Leesburg out in front 4-2.
After a rocky 1st inning, right-hander Tyler Donay would settle and give the Lightning 4.2 innings of work on the mound, almost throwing four scoreless inning after.
Leesburg would tack on some insurance in the 2nd, scoring in two runs to put the Lightning up 6-2, adding another run in the 7th to extend the lead to 7-2.
Justin Gay and Evan Loeser would help the Lightning out tremoundsly out of the bullpen, throwing 4.1 innings of hitless baseball and not allowing a single run across.
Loeser would also strikeout five batters in his three innings of work to shut the door on DeLand, who did not score a run after the 1st.
"That was really, really big," Rich Billings stated when talking about the early innings. "And, you know, I think more than anything, it helped Tyler Donay relax a little bit after giving up 2 runs in a tough first inning. But our hitters did a great job just coming right out and just punching them right in the mouth after we got hit. You know, they could've stayed down and they didn't. They punched right back. Ryan Jenkins had a great at bat, and Orlando Pena came up and just got a huge hit for us in the 1st inning like he's done so many times. So, yeah, that was a huge weight off the shoulders there."
Tonight, the Leesburg Lightning will look to become only the 2nd team in league history to go back-to-back as they try win Game 2 and sweep the Suns. First Pitch at Conrad Park is 7 p.m.
