The Lightning Fall Just Short To The River Rats, 7-6
(Leesburg, Fla.)- The Leesburg Lightning battled their way back in a game of two halves, falling short to the Sanford River Rats on Sunday night, 7-6.
The Sanford River Rats grabbed the opening run in the top of the 1st off a Stewart Puckett sacrifice fly that would score CF Kalayo Shaw to give the River Rats a 1-0 lead.
Shaw would also add to the run support in the top of the 2nd, connecting on a grand slam shot to left field to put Sanford up 5-0.
Camden Williamson would also score for the River Rats in bottom of the 3rd, coming off a wild pitch, giving Leesburg a 6-0 lead, lurking to grab a mercy rule.
However, in the bottom of the 3rd, the Lightning would strike for the first time on the night off a Gabe Santiago RBI-single that would score in Riley Fitzgerald, putting the game at 6-1.
Manny Santana would extend the lead for the River Rats on a passed ball, putting Sanford back up by six, but the Lightning would tack on two runs in the inning, including one coming off a RBI-single from Michael Furry.
From the 5th onwards, the Lightning would inch closer to the lead, beginning with an RBI-single from Ryan Jenkins that would advance Santiago to third, scoring off an error after the base hit.
In the 6th, Drew Clymer would join the party, scoring Michael Furry to put the Lightning within two.
In the 7th, James Strom would connect on his third home run of the season, a solo blast to right field, putting the Bolts within one. But Andrew Lepine was able to hold Leesburg, giving the River Rats their 14th win of the season.
Through this game, Leesburg took advantage to get a lot of their runners on due to errors from the River Rats, even allowing the run to score in the 5th. But the early lead by Sanford was too much to conquer for the Lightning.
The Bolts are back in action tonight, taking on the DeLand Suns for the beginning of the final week of the regular season. First Pitch is at 7 p.m.
