Lightning Win Fourth Straight With All-Around Performance
DELAND, Fla.- The Leesburg Lightning (6-6) continued their hot stretch Saturday night, winning their fourth consecutive game, this time by a score of 8-3 over the DeLand Suns.
The Lightning have been on fire at the plate, as they continued their offensive onslaught over the last four games to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice from Drew Cavanaugh (Florida Southern) that scored Tyler LeJuene (Northwest Florida State). LeJuene was welcomed back into the Leesburg lineup in the leadoff after recovering from a sprained ankle sustained earlier in the Lightning season.
Clayton Boroski (North Florida) got the start on the bump for Leesburg, and after giving up a run in the second inning, he pitched an absolute gem, throwing four innings and only giving up one hit on the day.
After DeLand tied the game in the second inning, the Lightning took the lead on a Logan Chapman (Georgia Tech) RBI in the third inning and never looked back.
Leesburg blew the game open in the fourth inning, an inning which included RBI singles from LeJeune and Austin Brinling (South Carolina) to give the Lightning a 6-1 lead.
After tacking on one more insurance run in the fifth inning, Chapman delivered the nail in DeLand’s coffin, hitting his first home run of the season to extend the Lightning lead to 8-1 in the seventh inning.
The Suns would add a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a comeback effort, but it was not enough as Leesburg took home their fourth consecutive win by a score of 8-3.
This was the first game in a scheduled doubleheader between the two teams, and the second matchup started, but was suspended after the first inning with the Lightning leading 3-0.
The Lightning are scheduled to be back in action on the road Monday night, starting a two-game set with the Orlando Snappers. First pitch is set for 7 PM at Lake Highland Prep.
