Lightning Take Series Finale From The Dawgs
WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Leesburg Lightning (16-9) used a strong pitching performance to take a 5-1 win and clinch the series over the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs (8-15) on the road Thursday night.
Layton Perry (Jacksonville) was the backbone once again for this Lightning pitching staff, as he pitched four shutout innings, while only giving up one hit. This was crucial for the Lightning, as their only run through the first seven innings came on an RBI single in the third inning from Austin Brinling (South Carolina) scored Hayden Perry (Samford) to give Leesburg a 1-0 lead.
Dustin Dunlap (Mars Hill) came in for Perry on the mound to start the fifth inning, and pitched three solid innings, but gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, which allowed Winter Park to tie the game up at 1-1.
The deadlock would be shortlived, as Leesburg answered with two runs in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout from Tyler LeJeune (Northwest Florida State) and a wild pitch that brought in Brooks Bryan (Troy), which gave the Lightning a late 3-1 lead.
RBI singles from Cade Sadler (Northwest Florida State) and Maika Niu (New Orleans) added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning to extend the Leesburg lead to 5-1.
Shutout bullpen appearances from Jake Hill (Flagler) and Jace Trautner (Indian River State) preserved the leads in the eighth and ninth inning, capping off a phenomenal pitching performance from Leesburg and a 5-1 win for the Lightning.
“Everyone from Layton (Perry) to the guys who came out of the bullpen were fantastic tonight,” Leesburg Lightning Head Coach Rich Billings said. “It’s important for those guys because they will build some confidence with this success from tonight going forward.”
Leesburg sent a season-high 14 different hitters to the plate in this game, trying to create an offensive spark and showing off the depth of this Lightning roster offensively.
“These guys handle and embrace the rotation really well,” Billings said. “We have a lot of depth, it doesn’t matter who we put in there, they are going to compete and play hard and that is a really nice luxury to have.”
With the win Thursday night, the Lightning capped off a series with Winter Park, in which they took three out of four games from the Diamond Dawgs. They now trail Sanford by one game for first place in the league standings.
The Lightning will be off Friday and Saturday, but will be back in action Sunday on the road at Winter Garden. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM at Olympia High School.
