Lightning Shutout the Squeeze
Leesburg, Fla. – Five Leesburg Lightning pitchers combined for a complete game shutout, while there was plenty of offense to go around in Monday night’s 9-0 victory over the Winter Garden Squeeze.
The Lightning struck early in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits from Cornell Nixon (Eastern Kentucky), Austin Simmons (Thomas) and Harrison Scanlon (Western Kentucky). Leesburg was also aided by sloppy defensive play from Winter Garden; the Squeeze had an error and a wild pitch in the frame.
Winter Garden would threaten in the top of the second inning, managing to load the bases with two outs. However, Leesburg starter Zach McMullen (South Alabama) managed to escape the jam unscathed when he coaxed the dangerous Cody Burgess (Florida Southern) into a popout to end the threat.
The game would remain close until the fifth inning when another offensive explosion from the Leesburg bats extended the lead. With two outs and two on, Clay Simmons (Columbia State) roped a double to score Austin Simmons. After a pitching change, Tanner Long (Thomas) would come around to score as well on a wild pitch, making it 5-0.
With a comfortable lead, Head Coach Rich Billings turned the game over to his bullpen. The Leesburg staff ranks second in the Florida League in ERA, and demonstrated their dominant stuff to close out the game. MacLain Larson (Flagler), Jeremiah Garcia (USC-Lancaster), Dan Twitty (Saint Leo) and Nate Brecklin (Citadel) combined to allow three hits and no walks during the final four frames.
The final nail in the coffin came on a two-run homerun from Long in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was his first “longball” of the season, and helped add to his team high RBI total of 16.
Zach McMullen earned the win on the mound, allowing no runs on five hits. He walked three batters and struck out a season high six. McMullen continued his dominance as he has not allowed an earned run all season (five appearances, 16.2 innings).
Austin Simmons led the team on offense, going 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Lightning will travel to Heller Bros. Ballpark on Tuesday morning for an 11 am showdown with the Squeeze. Their next home game is on Friday, July 1st against the Altamonte Springs Boom.
