Lightning Hold Off Comeback To Win Third Straight
LEESBURG, Fla.-The Leesburg Lightning won their third consecutive game Friday night, beating the DeLand Suns 8-6.
Both teams started the game scoreless through the first two innings, as Layton Perry (Jacksonville) put in a phenomenal start on the bump for Leesburg.
“It’s really big to get going early, I had all three pitches working for me tonight,” Perry said. “It was really important for us to get ahead and stay ahead to punch those guys out.”
Perry would finish with five shutout innings, eight strikeouts, and only three hits allowed on the night.
The third inning was a huge deciding factor in this one, as the Lightning put up six runs, including a Brooks Bryan (Troy) home run, the first of the season for both him and the Lightning as a team.
“It nice to have some power from a big, left-handed bat in the middle of our lineup,” Lightning Head Coach Rich Billings said. “He is a younger guy, so he is just going to develop as the summer goes along.”
DeLand finally found their way onto the scoreboard with two runs in the seventh inning, but the Lightning quickly responded with a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, including a solo homerun by Michael Furry (St. Johns River State).
After giving up four runs in the top of the ninth inning, Grant Edwards (New Orleans) was able to hold off the DeLand comeback effort and hold onto an 8-6 win, their third in a row.
The story of the game for Leesburg was capitilizing on mistakes from DeLand and finally finding some power in their lineup, both things that the Lightning have struggled with so far this season.
“I think it’s always important to hit the way we did, especially when they are handing us runs like they did in that third inning,” Billings said. “I was disappointed with some of the missed RBI opportunities tonight after that third inning because we had a chance to put them away and just did not do a very good job of that.”
The Lightning will wrap up their three-game set with the Suns in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of the first matchup is set for 4:30 PM at Conrad Park in DeLand.
