Lightning Blow Late Lead At Winter Park
WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Leesburg Lightning (15-9) blew a two-run lead in the eighth on the road Wednesday night, as they fell by a score of 8-7 to the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs (8-14).
Both teams put plenty of offense on the board early, as the Lightning score four runs in the opening frame. RBIs from Logan Chapman (Georgia Tech), Brooks Bryan (Troy), Hayden Perry (Samford), and Tyler Gerteisen (North Florida) gave Leesburg a short-lived 4-0 lead.
Winter Park quickly responded in the bottom half of the first inning, as the Diamond Dawgs put three runs on Lightning starting pitcher Clayton Boroski (North Florida) to cut the Leesburg lead to 4-3.
Both pitchers settled in through the second inning, but both offenses scored two runs a piece in the third inning to move the Lightning lead to 6-5. An RBI single by Joseph Massa (Samford) and another RBI walk from Perry highlighted Leesburg’s offensive effort in the third inning.
A sacrifice fly from Tyler LeJeune (Northwest Florida State) that scored Gerteisen extended the Lightning lead to 7-5 in the fifth inning, and phenomenal bullpen outings from Jayson Chaffee (Northwest Florida State) and Tyler Donay (Embry-Riddle) held the Leesburg lead up until the eighth inning.
Lightning reliever Grant Edwards (New Orleans), who has been one of Leesburg’s best relievers this season, did not have his best stuff in this one, as three runs from Winter Park would give the Diamond Dawgs their first lead of the ballgame in the eighth inning.
Even with the heart of the order up for the Lightning in the ninth, Winter Park was able to retire Leesburg in order and sneak away with an 8-7 win.
The Lightning now trail Sanford by one and a half games for the first spot in the league standings. Leesburg will look to take home a series win on the road Thursday night against Winter Park in the finale of this four-game set between the two teams. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM Thursday night at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park.
